new iPhone in your hands. Nice. But that’s when the real work begins. How do you get all your photos, apps, and contacts onto it? Whether you’re switching from an old iPhone or from Android, there’s more involved than you might think.
From iPhone to iPhone
Apple has a built‑in feature for this: “Quick Start.” You hold your old and new iPhone next to each other and follow the steps on the screen. In theory, the new phone takes everything over from the old one: photos, apps, and settings.
But in practice, things often go differently. Think of apps that require you to log in again, settings that don’t transfer, or a backup that turns out not to be up to date. Especially if you’re not used to working with iCloud, transferring everything can become a frustrating task.
From Android to iPhone
Switching from Android is a bigger step. Apple created the “Move to iOS” app for this. Contacts, photos, videos, and your calendar can be transferred, but it only works if you do it during the initial setup and if everything on your Android phone is configured correctly.
Android apps aren’t available in the App Store. Most popular apps like Instagram, Spotify, and WhatsApp do exist for iPhone, but you’ll need to download and set them up again. That takes time.
What transfers and what doesn’t?
These usually transfer:
- Contacts
- Photos and videos
- Calendar
- Apps (iPhone to iPhone)
- Notes
- Browser history
These do not transfer automatically:
- App login details
- Android apps
- Payment information
- Two‑factor authentication
How long does it take?
That mainly depends on how much data you have. A few hundred photos and some apps? Expect twenty to thirty minutes. A full phone with years of photos, videos, and apps? Then you’ll easily spend an hour or more. And that doesn’t include the time needed to set up all your apps again.
Make sure both phones are well charged and connected to Wi‑Fi. That will make the transfer go as smoothly as possible.
Tip: don’t erase your old phone right away
Keep your old phone nearby after everything has been transferred. For some apps, like your banking app, it’s easier to log in again if you still have the old phone with you. Only erase it once you’re sure everything is set up correctly. It prevents a lot of hassle afterward.
